Science: Digestion - ch.3.1 Flashcards
Chemical Digestion + e.g.
- Complex substances are broken down into simple chemicals that the body can now absorb
- Chemical change
Mechanical Digestion + e.g.
- Food is broken down into smaller pieces by your teeth
- Physical change
Digestion
The process of breaking down food into usable nutrients.
Bolus
The tongue rolls food into a ball
Saliva
Moistens food, making slippery, slimy and easy to swallow

Gastric Juice
Digestive fluid containing hydrochloric acid, mucus & digestive juices
Digestive Juices
starts the digestion of protein
Hydrochloric Acid
Strong acid that kills bacteria in food.
Mucus
Protective layer preventing stomach to digest itself

Not part of the digestive tract
- Produces pancreatic juice that help digest fat, protein and carbohydrates
- regulates blood glucose levels
