Science Chemical Compounds Section 3 Flashcards
What is a compound?
When two or more elements combine chemically, they form a compound. (Can’t be taken apart)
What is an element?
Any substance that can’t be made any more simpler than it already is.
What is a carbohydrate?
An energy rich organic compound made of carbon hydrogen and oxygen. They are also important components to some cell parts.
What are lipids?
Organic compounds that contain more energy than carbohydrates. Can consist of olives oils and waxes(made of C, O, and H). It also makes up most of the cell’s membrane.
What are proteins?
Large organic molecules made of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and sometimes, sulfur. They make up many organelles in the cell.
What are amino acids?
These make up proteins
What is an enzyme?
They speed up chemical reactions. These are also types of proteins.
What is DNA?
The genetic material that carries info about an organism and it’s past from parent to offspring. It also contain the cell’s instruction they need to carry out life.
What is RNA?
Plays an important role in the production of proteins. It is also found in the cytoplasm.
What are nucleic acids?
They are very long organic molecules made of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, and phosphorous. Contain DNA and RNA.
