Cell Division Section 3 Flashcards
What is interphase?
First stage: the cell grows and makes a copy of its DNA, and prepares to divide into 2 cells. Two centrioles are also copied.
What is the cell cycle?
The sequence of growth and division.
What is mitosis?
Second stage: the stage in which the cell’s nucleus divides into 2 new nuclei.
What is cytokinesis?
Stage 3: The cell completes cell division. The organelles are distributed into both cells.
What are the 4 stages of mitosis? What do they do?
Prophase: the chromatin in the nucleus condenses and the pairs of centrioles move to separate parts of the cell with spindle fibers connected to them.
Metaphase: the chromosomes line up across the center of the cell each one attached to a spindle fiber at its centromere.
Anaphase: the centromeres split and each chromatid becomes a new chromosome. The new chromosomes move to opposite ends of the cell. The cell stretches out as the opposite ends are pushed apart.
Telophasew: the chromosomes stretch out and and lose their rod like appearance. A new nuclear envelope forms around each region of chromosomes. The DNA is once again separated by a membrane from the cytoplasm.
What is replication?
A cell making an exact copy of its DNA.
What are chromosomes?
Chromatin condenses to form rod like structures called chromosomes.
