Science Chapter 3.4 Flashcards
What is a skeleton and its 3 main functions
Is your body frame and it supports soft tissue, protection for your organs and to allow movement.
What is the main role of your axial skeleton and how many bones
Protection of your organs and is made up of 80 bones and includes the skull, vertebral column and breast bone
What is the main role of appendicular skeleton and how many bones
Is to allow movement and is made up of 126 bones includes shoulder blades, bones in arms and legs
What are the 2 types of bone tissue forms
COMPACT bone which makes up the outer layer of the bone and is dense heavy and gives the bone strength. SPONGEY bone which resembles honeycomb providing strong inner structure, gaps in spongey bone are filled with bone marrow.
What is the role of bone marrow
is a fatty jelly like material where red blood cells and platelets are made
What is a joint
Is a place in the body where 2 bones come together. Joints allow movement.
What do joints have to protect your bones from wear
Cartilage (smooth material covering end of bones) Synovial Fluid (lubricates bones end allowing them to slide over each other)
Name 4 types of joints
HINGE, BALL & SOCKET, PIVOT, SADDLE
What are ligaments
bands of tough flexible tissue that hold the bones in a joint together
What are muscles
It is your muscles that move bones, they are tissue that are able to contract and be stretched. Muscle can only pull
How many muscles are in the body
640
What are tendons
Tissues that attaches muscle to bone
What is the name of muscles that work in opposition to each other
Antagonistic Pairs
eg Biceps / Triceps
What is R.I.C.E
Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation
Treatment for minor Strains and Sprains
