Science chapter 1- Energy Flashcards
Radiation
Energy that travels as a wave
speed
the distance an object travels in a particular amount of time, such as a minute or hour.
electric charge
Property that causes matter to have a force, called electrical force, when it is placed near other charged matter. Can be positive or negative
conductor
Material that allows electric current to flow. A good conductor of electricity is metal and copper.
collision
when one object bumps into another object.
heat
The transfer of THERMAL energy from one object to another?
kinetic energy
The energy of a moving object
wave
A form of the transfer of energy
potential energy
Stored energy
resistor
A wire- a device used to control the flow of electricity.
How would you describe heat?
It’s the transfer of thermal energy from one object to another.
True or False- Metal is a thermal conductor.
True
What causes an object that is not moving to gain kinetic energy?
A force causes the object to start moving.
How do you know that a falling domino that causes another domino to move has energy?
Energy is the ability to do work or make a change. The falling domino caused a change in the domino it hit.
What happens to an object when heat is transferred to it?
Heat will flow from the warmer object to the cooler object.
How do electric currents flow in circuits?
The battery provides energy that causes the electric current to flow. The wire provides a path for the current.
True or false: Vibration causes sound energy.
True - sound is energy in the particles that vibrate as they pass through matter.
True or false: a collision between two cars traveling at a slow speed (fender bender in a parking lot) will have more damage than a collision between two cars traveling at a high speed.
False- Cars traveling at a fast speed will have more energy. At the point of collision, the energy is transferred causing a lot of damage.
