Chapter 2- Science- Renewable/Nonrenewable Energy Flashcards
fuel
a material that releases energy as heat when it burns.
combustion
The process of burning a fuel to produce heat and light.
turbine
a device that spins to produce energy
generator
a device that changes energy of motion into electrical energy.
battery
Stores chemical energy and can convert that energy into electrical energy.
Fossil Fuels
materials that formed as ancient plants and animals decayed underground. There are three main fossil fuels: coal, petroleum and natural gas.
coal
a hard black substance that is found underground. It is a non-renewable resource.
petroleum
a liquid fossil fuel formed by the decay of plants and animals.
Natural gas
a fossil fuel that occurs in the gas state. It flows through pipes to homes and businesses.
biomass
The burning of wood and other plant materials.
Sun
The most abundant source of energy
Fossil Fuels
Coal, petroleum and natural gas are all examples of fossil fuels. They are are NON-RENEWABLE. Once they’re gone, they’re gone. Poof.
pollutant
pollutants are harmful chemicals that are released during energy production and can poison land, water and air.
geothermal energy
energy created by pressure and heat underneath the earth’s crust.
What is nonrenewable energy? * REALLY know and understand this along with examples *
Energy used by nonrenewable resource. Fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas, petroleum, and nuclear energy. Once these materials are gone, they are gone forever. Nonrenewable energy sources take millions of years to replenish.
emission
The release of substances into the environment
greenhouse gas
A pollutant that makes the atmosphere able to hold heat.
nuclear fuel
an energy source that is made from unstable elements.
pollutant
a harmful substance that is released during energy production that can poison the land, water, and air.
What is renewable energy?* REALLY Know and understand this along with examples *
Renewable energy is energy made from abundant resources such as water, wind, and solar light (the sun). Examples of renewable energy are biomass, hydropower, geothermal energy, and solar energy.
