Science Ch.23.1 Flashcards
Antigen
a toxin or other foreign substance which induces an immune response in the body, especially the production of antibodies
Artery
Muscular blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart
Atherosclerosis
The buildup of plaque inside arteries
Blood
Is a fluid connective tissue. It circulates throughout the body through blood vessels by the pumping action of the heart.
Blood Pressure
The force exerted by circulating blood on the walls of blood vessels
Blood Type
Is a genetic characteristic associated with the presence or absence of certain molecules
Capillary
The smallest type of blood vessel. They connect very small arteries and veins.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD)
Diseases of the heart and blood vessels. The leading cause is atherosclerosis
Circulatory System
Allows the transport of materials from one place to another. Delivers oxygen and nutrients to cells and takes away wastes
Heart Attack
Occurs when the blood supply to part of the heart muscle is blocked and cardiac muscle fibers die.
Hypertension
High blood pressure
Plasma
The fluid part of blood
Platelet
Are cell fragments involved in blood clotting. They stick to tears in blood vessels and to each other, forming a plug at the site of injury. They also release chemicals that are needed for clotting to occur.
Pulmonary Circulation
Is a part of the circulatory system that carries blood between the heart and lungs.
Red Blood Cells
Cells in blood plasma that carry oxygen. They contain hemoglobin, a protein with iron that binds with oxygen.
