Science Ch 22.2 Flashcards
Adrenal Glands
Are located above the kidneys. The outer part secretes hormones such as cortisol, which helps the body deal with stress and aldosterone, which helps regulate the balance of minerals in the body
Endocrine System
The system of glands that release Chemical messenger molecules into the bloodstream
Gonads
Secrete sex hormones
Hypothalamus
Part of the brain that secretes hormones. It tells the pituitary glands to either secrete or stop secreting its hormones.
Pancreas
Located near the stomach. Its hormones include insulin, and glucagon. These two hormones work together to control the level of glucose in the blood.
Parathyroid Glands
Located behind the thyroid gland. It helps keep the level of calcium in the blood within a narrow range. Stimulates cells to dissolve calcium in bone matrix and release them into the blood.
Pineal Gland
Tiny glands located at the base of the brain. It secretes the hormone helps keep the level of calcium in the blood within a narrow range.
Pituitary Glands
Is attached to the hypothalamus by a thin stalk. The posterior (back) lobe stores hormones from the hypothalamus. And the front lobe secretes pituitary hormones.
Target Cell
A type of cell on which a hormone has an effect.
Thyroid Gland
Large glad in the neck. It increases the rate of metabolism in cells throughout the body. They control how quickly cells use energy and make proteins.
