science buoyancy Flashcards
What is the definition of mass?
Mass is the amount of matter in an object.
What is the definition of density?
Density is the ratio of mass to volume.
What is the definition of buoyancy?
Buoyancy is the upward force on an object in a fluid. It is the opposite of gravity.
How do you find the volume of an object?
Mass divided by density.
M/P = V
What is weight measured in?
N = Newtons
What is volume measured in?
Cm3 or mL
How do you find the density of an object?
Mass divided by volume.
m/v=p
What is density measured in?
mL/g or Cm3/g
(depends on how you measured the volume)
What is mass measured in?
g = Grams
What is water displacement?
A method used to find the volume of irregular objects.
What is the definition of volume?
The amount of space an object occupies.
What is the definition of weight?
The force of gravity pushing on objects or fluids.
What is a ballast tank?
Ballast Tanks are like the swim bladder of a submarine. They are chambers filled with air and water that control the submarine’s depth. When the submarine wants to descend, water valves open to fill the chamber with more water. When it wants to rise, air valves from compressed air tanks will enter the chamber displacing the water back into the water valves. This reduces the density.
What is a swim bladder?
The swim bladder is a gas-filled organ (usually oxygen) that many bony fish have to control their buoyancy, allowing it to go up and go down in the water without using an excessive amount of energy. Fish can adjust the amount of oxygen in their bladder, the more oxygen the higher they go, the less oxygen the lower they go.
Why does weight change on different planets?
Weight changes on different planets because the gravitational forces change on different planets due to the weight of the planet.
