science Flashcards
What is cohesion
The force of attraction between the particles of a substance.
What is adhesion
The force of attraction between particles of a fluid and particles of an other substance.
What is the difference between laminar and turbulent flow?
Laminar flow is smooth and regular and turbulent flow is chaotic and irregular.
What is viscosity?
What are examples of a viscous and non viscous fluid?
Viscosity is a measure of the thickness of a fluid. The more viscous it is the thicker it is.
Syrup is very viscous and water is not very viscous.
what is flow rate?
A measure of how quickly fluids move.
What are some examples of laminar and turbulent flow?
Turbulent could be white water rafting. Laminar could be water running through a pipe.
What is an example of both laminar and turbulent flow.
When you turn on the sink the water moves down perfectly but when it reaches the sink and stops flowing in a tube like shape it becomes turbulent.
Your bloodstream has a laminar flow. If your blood starts to clot your bloodstream becomes turbulent.
What is the particle theory?
1: All matter is made up of tiny particles.
2: Particles have space in between.
3: Particles are always moving.
4: Particles move faster when heated.
5: Particles are attracted to each other.
What are the 6 main bodily fluids?
1: Sweat
2: Oxygen
3: Blood
4: Urine
5: Stomach acid
6: Saliva
What is an eddy?
An eddy occurs when there is a structure that blocks a fluid flowing. This makes the fluid move in a circular motion.
What are fluid mechanics?
The study of how fluids behave in both at rest and in motion.
What are Fluid dynamics?
The study of fluids in motion.
What are aerodynamics?
Aerodynamics is the study of moving gasses.
What are hydrodynamics?
Hydrodynamics is the study of moving liquids
Streamlined?
A smooth shape designed to decrease resistance to fluid flow so it can flow easier.
What is surface tension?
Surface tension is when the particles on top of a liquid have a strong attraction with each other. This makes a film like substance form on top of the liquid.
Why is it important to control fluids in some industries?
In the food industry it is important to get fluids to flow when and where they want them to.
What is a fluid?
A fluid is something that flows. It is usualy a liquid or a gas. Fluids do not have a definate shape.
What does flow rate depend on?
- The surface the fluid is flowing on.
- The type of fluid.
- The force pushing on the fluid.
- The size of the pipe or opening the fluid is flowing through.
Aeronautics
The study of the science of flight.
Hemophilia
Hemophilia is when your blood does not clot like it should. When you start to bleed from an injury you cannot stop it.
Blood thinners
Blood thinners are medacines you take to prevent blood clots. Blood clotting can cause heart attacks or strokes.
What are the 2 fluids essential to life?
Water and air.
