Science 9 Flashcards
From atoms to tissues list Natures Levels of Organization that we have covered so far in order.
Atoms, Molecules, Cell Organelles, Cells, and Tissues.
What fact allows a scientist to identify different tissues using a microscope?
The cells that make up different tissues look different.
What do soft Osteocytes, red blood cells, and delicate vein valves in dino fossils indicate about the fossil’s age?
They indicate that the fossils can’t be millions of years old.
What does Hydroxyapatite do for bone tissue?
It makes bone tissue hard and strong.
What does Collagen do for bone tissue?
It makes the tissue more flexible
What do we call the Hydroxyapatite and Collagen mixture that exists between bone cells?
The bone matrix.
What are the three types of bone cells?
Osteoblasts, Osteocytes, and Osteoclasts.
What do the three types of bone cells do?
Osteoblasts make new bone matrix and put it where it belongs. Osteocytes maintain the existing bone matrix, and Osteoclasts break down the bone matrix.
Compare compact bone and spongy bone.
Compact bone has the cells packed tightly making it hard and strong. Spongy bone tissue has holes in it making it lighter and weaker.
What are the four types of tissue in the body?
Epithelial tissue, Connective tissue, Muscle tissue, and Nerve tissue.
What are the three kinds of muscle?
Skeletal muscle, Smooth muscle, and Cardiac muscle.
What do the different types of muscles do?
Skeletal muscles move the skeleton, Smooth muscles operate the organs, and Cardiac muscles operate the heart.
Which types of muscles are voluntary and which are involuntary?
Skeletal muscles are voluntary. Cardiac and Smooth are involuntary.
What connects muscle to bone?
Tendons.
What does cartilage do in a joint?
It covers the bones so they don’t scrape together.
What are the three functions of epithelial tissue?
Protection, absorption, and secretion.
Which function of the three is done by epithelial tissue in glands?
Secretion.
What is gastric juice?
An acid found in the stomach.
In general, what structures receive signals in a neuron, and what structures send them?
They receive them from the dendrites and send them down the axons.
What part of the neuron holds the nucleus and most of the organelles?
The cell body.
What does the Myelin Shealth do for nervous signals?
It makes the signals travel faster.
What is fascia?
A thin layer of tissue that holds muscles together.
What job does fat do?
It cushions things and it insulates the organism.
