Science 10 Flashcards
From atoms to organ systems list Nature’s Levels of Organization that we have covered so far.
Atoms, molecules, cell organelles, cells, tissues, organs, organ systems.
List the three sections of tissue starting with the outermost section and ending with the innermost section.
Epidermis, dermis, hypodermis.
Which of the three sections of tissue contains dead cells?
The epidermis.
Which of the three sections of tissue contain adipose tissue?
The hypodermis.
Which of the three sections of tissue contain hair follicles, sebaceous glands, blood vessels, and nerves?
The dermis.
Which of the three sections of tissue is referred to by the word “subcutaneous”?
The hypodermis.
What is the purpose of the dermal papillae?
They increase the surface area between the dermis and epidermis so that the cells oof the epidermis can get the oxygen and nutrients they need.
What visible structures do the dermal papillae give rise to?
They form fingerprints.
You are looking at a living and a dead skin cell. Which protein does the dead cell have a lot more of?
Keratin.
Which is better at identifying a specific person: DNA or fingerprints?
Fingerprints.
What chemical is responsible for the color of a person’s skin?
Melanin.
What do we call the cells that make melanin?
Melanocytes.
One person has dark skin and the other has light skin. Who is more susceptible to sunburns?
The person with light skin.
What do squamous cells, hair, nails, and rhino horns all have in common?
They all contain lots of keratin.
What glands are found associated with hair follicles, and what is the function of the substance they produce?
Sebaceous glands. They produce oil that softens and moistens the skin.
Compare the growth phases of eyelash hair and hair found on your head.
The hair on your head has a longer growth phase.
What are the four functions of the skeletal system?
Support, protection, storage, and hemopoiesis.
What are the two types of bone marrow?
Red bone marrow and yellow bone marrow.
What does each of the two types of bone marrow do?
Red does hemopoiesis, while yellow stores fat.
In a long bone, where is each type of bone marrow found?
Red bone marrow is found in the spaces of spongy bone tissue, while yellow bone marrow is found in the medullary cavity.
Which is made of bone, an epiphyseal plate or an epiphyseal line?
The epiphyseal line.
Which is found in an adult, an epiphyseal plate, or an epiphyseal line?
The epiphyseal line.
What is the thin layer of tissue surrounding the bone called?
The periosteum.
If a scientist is studying a bone that has holes and circles in it what type of bone is it?
Spongy bone.
