Science 8H - Unit 1: Prologue Flashcards
If '*' is after answer, the term is not necissarily useful for the current unit, but is included in study materials, and is likely useful in general.
Geology
The study of our planet*
Meteorology
The study of our atmosphere*
Astronomy
The study of Earth’s motions and objects in space*
Density
The amount of matter (stuff) in an object; the ration of mass to volume.
Basic density formula for any object
Density = mass/volume
(or D=M/V)
Basic units for Density
- g/mL
- g/cc
- g/cm^3
Does this have an effect on density?
Size
No, as long as you are dealing with the same substance.
Does this have an effect on density?
Temperature
Generally, as temperature increases density decreases.
(This does not apply to ice, which is in fact less dense than water.)
Does this have an effect on density?
Pressure
As pressure increases, density decreases.
Observation
Using your 5 senses (sight, taste smell, touch, hearing) to gather information about phenomena
Inference
A conclusion drawn based on your observations
Measurement
Expressing an observation with a numerical quantity and unit*
Change
Alteration of the environment or physical subject*
Cyclic Change
Change in which events will always repeat themselves in a type of pattern—can be predicted (seasons, moon phases, eclipses)
Non-Cyclic Change
Change in which events will not repeat themselves in a pattern—not predictable (earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, weather)
**most changes are cyclic and predictable
