Science Flashcards
Nutrient
A substance that provides nourishment, essentials for the maintenance of life and for growth.
Functions of carbohydrates
Gives energy (bread / rice / pasta)
Functions of protein
Gives muscles (chicken / fish / pig)
Functions of fibre
Helps push food trough your body (types of carbohydrates but not classed as a nutrient)
Functions of water
Cells are made up of 70% water (you should drink 1 litre a day)
Functions of lipids/fats
Provide short term energy
Functions of Vitamins
Helps your body function, grow and develop
Why does food need to be digested
So it can be broken down into nutrients
How does glucose get into your cells
When you digest a carbohydrate it gets broken down, absorbed into the bloodstream, carried by plasma and diffuses into the cells.
How does oxygen get into cells?
When you breath in oxygen fills the alveoli in your lungs. The oxygen then diffuses into your bloodstream. Oxygen is carried in red blood cells attached to haemoglobin and then diffuses into the cells
Kinetic energy
Movement
Electrical energy
Electricity and charge
Thermal energy
Energy transferred from heat
Sound energy
Energy that has come from a sound wave
Light energy
This is energy that has been produced by light
Chemical energy
Energy that and been made when two chemicals bond. Food is chemical energy
What does heat do to particles
It makes it vibrate more and if it’s a liquid or gas it also makes it move faster
Non renewable
A resource that can be used ONLY ONCE!!!
Renewable
A resource that can be used again and again like water
Coal oil gas
They are fossil fuels Three quarters of uk electricity comes from uk power stations powered by fossil fuels Affordable Large amount of energy Natural gas is environmentally friendly. Coal is bad for the environment Gas is toxic and flammable
Wind power
Wind power is made by wind turbines that take in kinetic energy from the wind. Its environmentally friendly
Renewable
Expensive to build/transport
Need the right location
How do we measure energy?
Joules
How does alcohol effect the body?
It slows the brain down and makes you do things without thinking. Also it slows your reaction time down.
