Science- 6th Grade Flashcards
Atom
Basic unit of matter
Different atoms are called
Chemical elements
Atoms are made up of three kinds of smaller particles called;
- protons
- neutrons
- electrons
Atoms join together to make;
Molecules
Protons
Are positively charged (+)
Neutrons
Have no charge
Electrons
Negatively charged (-)
Protons and neutrons
Found in the nucleus
1kg
1000g
Conduction
Transfer of heat by direct contact
Convection
Transfer of heat by movement of fluids
Radiaton
Transfer of heat by waves through the air
The three states of matter
- solid
- gas
- liquid
Solid to liquid
Melting
Liquid to gas
Evaporation
Liquid to solid
Freezing
Gas to liquid
Condensation
Solution
A mixture in which the particles of different kinds of matter are mixed evenly with each other
Liquid
Matter that takes up the shape of its container and takes up a definite amount of space
Chemical Reaction
Another term for chemical change
Solubility
A measure of the amount of a material that will dissolve in another material
Mass
The amount of matter in an object
Gas
Matter that has no definite shape and takes up no definite amount of space
Density
The property of matter that compares the amount of matter to the space taken up.
Density=Mass/Volume ( D=M/V)
Solid
Matter that has a definite shape and takes up a definite amount of space
Dissolves
When one material forms a solution with another material
Chemical change/chemical reaction
A change that produces one or more new substances and may release energy. Example;
2H+ O=H2O
The chemical substances on the left are called reactants,while the chemical substances on the right are called products.
Matter
Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space and has volume. Objects are matter.Matter is made up of molecules.
Pure substance
A pure substance has the same composition throughout. Two examples of pure substances are elements and compounds.
Examples of pure substances; table salt, sugar
Elements
Cannot be broken down
Compounds
Formed from the chemical combination of two or more elements.
Mixture
Formed when two or more substances ( solids,liquids, or gases) are physically combined.
-The parts of a mixture can be separated from one another.
Ex. Mixed nuts, salad
How do you find the volume of a given cube?
Volume=length x width x height
What are molecules made up of?
Molecules are made up of atoms
Ecosystem
a place where living and nonliving things interact
