Marilyn's Lesson 1 Plan UvU Flashcards
Weather is…
the day to day conditions of a region
Climate is…
the average weather conditions of a region
What is Climate affected by…?
- latitude (distance from the equator)
- altitude (height above sea level)
A change in ANY of these factors can change the weather, these factors are…
- air temperature
- air pressure
- moisture in the air
- cloud cover
- ocean temperature
- wind patterns
What is air pressure?
air pressure depends on temperature and gravity
(as temperature rises, air molecules move apart and the air pressure goes down. as temperature moves down, pressure goes up)
High and Low Pressure Systems…
- a warm area may cause a low-pressure system (a Low)
- a cool area may cause a high-pressure system (a High)
What causes rain?
Precipitation (to be slightly more specific in a way the water cycle could also be an answer)
What is humidity?
the amount of water vapor in the air
What are the four MAIN types of precipitation?
- Rain
- Snow
- Sleet
- Hail
How does wind change weather?
Wind travels from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure. But since earth is rotating winds are shifted in a curve, this shift in wind direction is called the Coriolis Effect.
