Science 5-4/5-3 Flashcards
Carbon Cycle
Carbon is transferred between the ocean, soil, atmosphere, and living things over time
Cellular Respiration (CC)
When oxygen is used to change glucose into ATP
The 3 main cycles in an ecosystem
Carbon, Nitrogen, Water
2 main types of energy involved in the Greenhouse Effect (GE)
Ultraviolet Energy (short wavelength) and Infrared Energy (long wavelength)
Decomposition (NC)
Bacteria decompose plants and animals, releasing their nitrogen (as well as carbon) back into the atmosphere and Earth
Runoff (WC)
Water moving along the surface of the Earth
Photosynthesis (CC)
Plants use Carbon dioxide and the energy from the sun to produce glucose
Nitrogen Uptake (Assimilation) (NC)
Organic Nitrogen is absorbed by plants through their roots for their nitrogen needs. Animals consume plants or other animals for their nitrogen uptake
Water Cycle
A cycle which the water moves from the ground and into the atmosphere, repeating itself
Nitrogen Cycle
A processes where nitrogen moves through both living and nonliving things
Evaporation (WC)
Liquid water from oceans, lakes and rivers receive energy from the sun and turn into water vapor, rising into the atmosphere
Nitrogen Fixation (NC)
Nitrogen in the atmosphere is turned into ammonium or nitrogen dioxide. This is done mostly by bacteria in soil, some plants, and lightning strikes
Condensation (WC)
As the water vapor rises into the atmosphere, it begins to cool and turns back into a liquid form (Clouds)
Decomposition (CC)
Organisms breakdown organic material and release CO2 back into the atmosphere
3 major greenhouse gases (GE)
Carbon dioxide (CO2), Water Vapor, and Methane
