Q

what is the pancreas

A

located under the stomach
has the pancreatic duct which is plugged into the same place as the bile duct
has gland which produces a digestive juice called pancreatic juice is 97% water and 3% enzyme Pancreatic amylase continues carbohydrate chemical digestion
Pancreatic lipase starts the chemical digestion of lipids (fats and oils)
Pancreatic trypsin continues the chemical digestion of protein

Q

what is the small intestine (s.i.)

A

between 15’ and 18’ feet long
in the first 1/3 of the small intestine, digestion is completed
there are intestinal glands in the first 1/3 which produce intestinal juice
Intestinal juice is made up of 97% water and 3% enzymes (intestinal amylase, lipase, and trypsin)
Intestinal amylase completes carbohydrate digestion
Intestinal lipase completes lipid digestion
Intestinal trypsin completes protein digestion

Q

what happens in the large intestine

A

Made of involuntary muscle 8’-9’ ft long
What’s left in the chyme?
Bacteria, bile, fiber, {vitamins, minerals, water are absorbed by the capillaries of the large intestine}
Fiber- cellulose cell walls from plants (fruits, grains, vegetables) good because it gives bulk to the chyme to make peristalsis easier to squeeze the chyme
The chyme becomes a brown (because of the bile) semisolid
