Science Flashcards
How are humans different from other organisms?
Were created in the image of God
What are the 4 different types of tissues and their functions?
- Epithelial: lines the external and internal surfaces of your body
- Connective: supports, connects, and protects other body structures
- Muscle: contracts to move your body or substances through your body
- Nervous: receives and transmits electrochemical impulses
What are the 3 layers of skin?
- Epidermis: outer layer made of epithelial tissue
- Dermis: middle layer made of connective tissue (contains blood vessels, sweat glands, hair follicles)
- Hypodermis: inner layer made of fat
The pigment responsible for much of the color of human skin is?
Melanin, Genetics, and Environment
When did different ethnic groups likely develop?
The Tower of Babel
What are the two different types of joints?
Moveable and immovable
Which type of joint is your elbow?
Movable
What are ligaments?
A tough, flexible band of connective tissue that holds bones together at a joint
What are tendons?
A band of connective tissue that attaches muscle to bone
What are the different types of muscle?
- Striated: has tiny lines (skeletal muscles)
- Smooth: doesn’t have tiny lines (muscles on organs)
- Cardiac: striated involuntary muscle in the heart
Biceps and triceps are examples of which type of muscle?
Skeletal muscle, striated
What happens to your biceps when your triceps contract?
They relax
Which type of tissue is used to move substances throughout your body?
Connective
What are tissues?
A group of cells
What are organs?
A collection of tissues
What is the subcutaneous layer made up of?
Fat
How do voluntary muscles move the body?
You control how they move
Do skeletal muscles work in pairs?
Yes
What is the difference between voluntary muscles and involuntary muscles?
Voluntary muscles you control; involuntary you don’t control
What is the striated, involuntary muscle in the heart called?
Cardiac muscle
When do muscles begin lactic acid fermentation?
When they don’t have enough oxygen
What are all of the functions of the skeletal system?
- Blood cell production
- Mineral storage
- Protection
- Support
- Movement
Explain how skin regulates body temperature.
It sweats, adjusts blood flow
