Science 1: Vocabulary Flashcards
Observe
Use your senses to gather information
Describe
To tell about something’s properties
Measure
To compare something to a standard unit or value, for a property
Solubility
A property of material that refers to how well it dissolves in another material, such as water
Atom
The smallest part of an element that still has the properties of the element
Atomic Theory
The idea that everything is made of small particles
Compound
Matter made of two or more elements
Molecule
The smallest particle of a compound that still has the properties of the compound
Ion
An atom with a net electric charge other than zero (different number of protons and electrons)
Conclude
Use data and facts to make a statement
Organize
To sort something
Temperature
A measure of fast something’s particles are moving
Mass
The amount of matter in a substance
Volume
The amount of space an object takes up
Solid
A substance that has a definite shape
Liquid
A substance that has a definite volume but does not have a definite shape
Gas
A substance that does not have a definite shape or volume
Differentiate
To tell the difference between things
Physical change
A change in some properties of matter that does not form a different kind of matter
Chemical change
A change that produces one or more new substances
Establish
To demonstrate or show something to be true
Support
To back up a claim with evidence, facts or observations
Conservation of matter
The law that in any chemical or physical change, the total mass of the matter does not change
Chemical reaction
When one or more substance changes into one or more new substances
Mixture
Different materials are placed together, but each material in the mixture keeps its own properties
Component
Parts of a mixture
Solution
A mixture in which substances are spread out evenly and do not settle to the bottom of the container
