SCI Main Ideas Flashcards
Neurological Level
Most distal n root level that is INTACT for bilateral S and M
normal sensation and 3/5 MMT with 5/5 right above
MOST to least common types OF SCI
Incomplete tetra
complete para
incomplete para
complete tetra
Most common levels ?
C4-6
T12-L1
mobile/stable
what do steroid help wtith in the acute phase of SCI
preserve damaged nerve cells and reduce tisssue damage/bleeding
what does methylprednisone help with
gold standard!!! reduce damage caused by inflammation of SC and busting open of damaged cells releasing toxic components of cells into healthy cells (prevents progressive damage)
Halo precautions
no overhead reaching, no lifting more than 5 lbs, bathing restrictions, avoid crowds
Spastic/reflexive Bladder
UMN, above L1 injury
bladder fills and reflex automatically triggers it to empty
Flaccid or non-reflexive bladder
LMN injuries at L1 or below
loss of ability to empty bladder automatically
-can become over stretched and back up into ureters
Lying pressure reliefs
sitting pressure reliefs
turn every 2 hours
every 30 mins for 1 minute each time
AD is crisis for SCI at or above ____ level
T6
AD causes ____ of blood vessels of skin and viscera resulting in ____ BP above Neuro level
constriction
increased
what is autonomic dysreflexia
massive uncompensated reaction of the sympathetic division of ANS to noxious stimuli below level of lesion
lesions above ______ require artificial ventilation due to _______ n involvement
C4
phrenic n
lesions from _____ can lead to inspiratory and expiratory muscle weakness
C5-T12
Pulm complications LEVEL
diaphragm
C3-5
HARDER to breathe in sitting
