NUTRITIONAL NEEDS - 4/6yrs:
- More energy
- More Protein
- More Vitamins ( not C & D )
- More Minerals ( not Iron )
- Asian children at risk of Vit D deficiency
Why are asian children at risk of Vit D deficiency?
Increased pigmentation reduced the skins ability to produce vit d from sunlight
Why do they need more energy & protein?
Because it is a time of rapid growth and development
NUTRITIONAL NEEDS - 7/10yrs:
- Need for energy/protein/vits & minerals increase again
- Except Vit C, A or Thiamin
DIETARY NEEDS:
- 5/10 portions of f&v a day
- Healthy balanced diet
- No sugary snacks
- Smaller meals for smaller stomachs perhaps more frequently
- Gradual weight gain
- Milk & dairy for strong bones
- Iron rich foods
- 4/6yrs = 3g salt a day
- 7/10yrs = 5g salt a day
Why are sugary snacks not advised?
Because they are often low in its & minerals and high in sat fats/sugar. They can cause dental decay if eaten between meal times.
Why are Iron rich foods important?
Because IDA is associated with poor weight gain and delay in development.
Why are frequent meals a good idea?
Because children have a high energy need and it may be necessary for 4/6yrs with smaller stomachs to ensure they get enough energy they need.
