What is Psychosis?
- Loss of reality testing
* Misinterpretation and misapprehension of reality
What is Schizophrenia?
a flat affect and speech that is difficult to follow - some may have paranoid delusions and others may not.
Epidemiology (incidence) of schizophrenia
- prevalence is about 1%
- Peak onset: males 15-25 years, females 25-35 years
Positive Symptoms:
- Hallucinations
- Delusions
- Disorganised thinking & behaviour
Cognitive Symptoms?
- Problems w/ work memory
- Attention
- Executive functioning (ability to organise)
- 50% report depression
Diagnosis of Schizophrenia?
must have 2/5 symptoms for at least one month:
1/2 symptoms must be delusions, hallucinations, or disorganized speech.

Phases of a psychotic episode?
Phase 1: Prodrome
Phase 2: Acute
Phase 3: Recovery / Residual
What is the prodromal phase in Schizophrenia?
- Poor concentration
- Vague thinking
- Depression &/or anxiety
- Delusional mood
- Social withdrawal
- Symptoms develop over months/years
What medications are available to treat Schizophrenia?
- Antipsychotic medications diminish the positive symptoms of schizophrenia and prevent relapses.
- Clozapine is the most effective medication but is not recommended as first-line therapy.
Negative Symptoms?
- Limited emotional expression
- Social Withdrawal
- A-motivation
- Lack of interest
Risk of Suicide in people suffering from Schizophrenia?
- 40% report suicidal thoughts
- 20 - 40% attempt suicide
- 4.9% of individuals with schizophrenia die by suicide
Why is early intervention important?
- ↓ recurrence of psychosis
- control symptoms
