Schizophrenia - Evaluations Of Psychological Therapies Flashcards
Outline the evidence for effectiveness for CBT
Sameer Jauhar et al (2014) studied the results of 34 CBT therapies for schizophrenics and they concluded that CBT had a significant, but small effect on both the positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia
Outline the evidence for effectiveness for family therapy
Pharoah et al concluded, from the multiple studies they investigated, that family therapy generally decreased readmission into the hospital and improved the quality of life for patients and their families. However, the results were rather inconsistent and there were problems with the evidence. Therefore, the evidence for family therapy is fairly weak
Outline the evidence for effectiveness for token economy
McMonagle and Sultana 2009 found only three studies who randomly allocated patients into conditions. Only one of these three studies showed positive effects on the symptoms of schizophrenia
Outline the evidence for effectiveness of psychological therapies of schizophrenia
Overall there is only modest support for the effectiveness of psychological treatments and schizophrenia remains one of the harder mental health problems to treat.
Explain how each of the psychological therapies improve quality of life even though they do not cure the illness
CBT helps the patient make sense of the illness and in some cases challenge some of their symptoms.
Family Therapy helps the patient and their family reduce the stress of living with schizophrenia.
Token Economy helps the patient develop more socially acceptable behaviour and helps them re-interstate into society.
Outline the ethical issues surrounding token economy
The biggest problem with token economy is that the patients with the mild symptoms are more likely to comply with the desirable behaviours so they’ll get more awards than the patients with more severe symptoms which therefore creates a discrimination in this treatment.
Outline the ethical issues surrounding CBT
CBT involves challenging a person’s paranoia, but at what point does this interfere with an individual’s freedom of thought such as affecting a persons beliefs in politics.
