A
Token economies are where patients are awarded basic tokens for performing basic tasks and then they can trade them in for real prices

How does it work?
A
The patient with schizophrenia is given a token when they complete a desirable task, such as getting out and bed and getting changed. They can then pay in these tokens for real rewards such as sweets

What are the tokens and how do they help?
A
The tokens have no value in themselves, but when traded in they grant the patient a prize, this means they work through operant conditioning by associating themselves with prizes and therefore making the task seem worth while.
