What are hallucinations?
When an individual perceives things around them that aren’t real, they can involve any of the five senses.
What are delusions?
When an individual firmly holds onto irrational beliefs about the world despite evidence contradicting them.
What are positive symptoms of schizophrenia?
Symptoms that involve additional experiences that people don’t normally have including hallucinations and delusions.
What are negative symptoms of schizophrenia?
Symptoms that involve the absence of experiences people normally have. Including avolition and speech poverty.
What is avolition?
When an individual feels a persistent lack of motivation or energy to complete every day tasks.
What is speech poverty?
When an individual uses minimal speech and shows a lack of spontaneous unprompted speech.
What is schizophrenia diagnosed by?
DSM - if a patient shows at least two symptoms for at least six months

What is inter reliability in terms of schizophrenia?
When multiple doctors agree on the same diagnosis for a patient with certain symptoms, e.g. hallucinations or delusions.
What is comorbidity?
One individual having more than one mental disorder, e.g. schizophrenia and depression.
What is symptom overlap?
When two or more disorders share the same symptoms needed for classification e.g. schizophrenia and bipolar disorder share symptoms such as delusions.
