what are features
involve stats about the disorder, or aspect of it such as how the illness develops or how other factors such as age and gender link
what are symptoms
what categorise the disorder with regard to how the person thinks, feels or behaves
what are the features of s1
- 1% of population have it
- a 1/4 of those who have an s1 episode never have one again
- another 1/4 have it without a break
- 1/2 have periods of recovery and periods of symptoms
what are the symptoms of s1
- hearing voices
- being guided by others
- flattened emotions
- not speaking
- thought disordered
- hallucinations
- scared of people
- disorganised
- paranoia
- voices can tell him to ‘do things’
- catatonic behaviour
what are positive rankings
- hallucinations = hearing or seeing things
- delusions = false beliefs, thinking their movements are controlled by someone else
- thought disordered = makes someone’s speech hard to follow. lose concentration or muddled thinking
what are negative rankings
- alogia = poverty of speech
- abolition = lack of motivation
- lack of energy
- social withdrawal
- flatness of emotions
- mot looking after appearance and self
what is catatonic behaviour
physical ticks ‘sped up’. movement/gesture or statue like
evaluation of positive symptoms
tend to have a greater weight when diagnosing s1 but they can be affected by cultural differences so perhaps should not be weighted as strongly as negative symptoms which might be more objectively measured
evaluation of negative symptoms
seems less effected by cultural factors so they can be more objectively measured
lack of energy can be easy measured but hearing voices or not is impossible
prodromal features have been found to be present in may adolescents and cannot be taken to indicate the onset of s1 on their own
