What does psychosis mean
symptom of mental illness characterized by a radical change in personality.
Someone with psychosis is
unable to distinguish the real from the unreal
Indications of psychosis:
Delusions
Hallucinations
Disorganized speech
Disorganized or catatonic behaviour:
Most common types of delusions
Paranoid
Other types of delusions:
Reference, Religious, Grandeur
Two types of hallucinations
Auditory- external or internal. Sound like real voice
Visual- can be actual hallucinations
Prodromal signs
symptoms that indicate that schizophrenia may be developing
Examples of prodromal signs:
Quiet, passive, introverted peculiar behaviours abnormal affect unusual speech have a lack of friends
Negative symptoms
Symptoms that are gone/ taken away Affect: i.e.. have flat or blunted affect Motivation: i.e.apathy Grooming and hygiene Decreased spontaneous movements
Positive Symptoms
Symptoms present themselves added symptoms Hallucinations Delusions Bizarre behavior
Other symptoms
Illusions Censthetic hallucinations Cigarette smoking Comoridity of substance Medical illness
Clanging associations:
Thoughts associated by the sounds of words
Derailment
breakdown in both the logical connection between ideas
Flight of ideas
thoughts seem to move abruptly from idea to idea
Neologism
invention of new words or phrases or the use of words in idiosyncratic ways
