Depression
major depressive episode criteria
Must have 5 or more symptoms during a 2-week period and represents a change in functioning.
Physical signs that mask depression
Pain, headaches, body aches.

more likely to complain about fatigue, irritability, sleep problems, and loss of interest in work and hobbies
Other signs in men with depression
anger, aggression, violence, reckless behaviour, and substance abuse
some factors in depression for women
premenstrual syndrome (PMS), premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), postpartum depression, and perimenopausal depression
depression in teens
hostile, grumpy, or easily lose his or her temper
depression in older people
bereavement, loss of independence, health problems—can lead to depression
Prevalence/ Prognosis
25% in women, up to 12% in men (vs. 1% for bipolar)
10-15% ultimately commit suicide
