Know the diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia
•Characteristic symptoms - 2 required for at least one month:
o Delusions
o Hallucinations
o Disorganized speech
o Grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior
o Negative symptoms such as affective flattening
- Social/occupational dysfunction in work, interpersonal relatioships, or self-care
- Duration of symptoms – for at least 6 months for full form
- Mood disorder has not played prominent part in illness
- Illness – not due to medication/medical condition/substance abuse
- Not part of autism or other pervasive developmental disorder.
Know the proposed causes of schizophrenia: Environmental

Know the major classes of antipsychotic drugs, their side effects, and proposed mechanism of action

What is the prevalence of Schizophrenia?
1% of people
What is the typical age of onset for Schizophrenia?
15-35 years (aka late adolescence or early adulthood)
Clinica symptoms of schizophrenia
Positive symptoms: Hallucinations and delusions
Negative symptoms: Loss of pleasure, loss of will or drive, disorganized or impoverished thoughts and speech, flattened affect
Cognitive impairment: Have an IQ on average about 5-10pts below the general population
