Schizophrenia 2 Flashcards
What do agonistic drugs do for schizophrenia?
MIMICS - increases synthesis of neurotransmitter molecules
What do antagonistic drugs do for schizophrenia?
BLOCKS - the synthesis of neurotransmitter molecules
What system is schizophrenia a disorder of?
The dopaminergic system.
Name the two tracts in the dopaminergic system that have a role in schizophrenia?
Mesolimbic and nigrostriatal
What are the main molecules with abnormalities involved in schizophrenia?
Dopamine.
Name some of the D2 family of treatments for schizophrenia.
Haloperidol, spiroperidol, chlorpromazine.
What does an antagonistic treatment do for receptor activity?
Stops receptor activity.
What happens with NDMA receptors?
When these are blocked by NDMA antagonists, they mimic pos/neg/cog/affective symptoms
What does a blockade of NDMA receptors do?
Creates hypofrontality
What is hypfrontality?
Decrease function in prefrontal cortex - association with negative and cognitive deficits.
