- sensory experiences; not based in reality
- auditory/visual hallucinations usually take form of hearing voices that aren’t there
- the voices are normally critical + unfriendly
- can also see, smell and taste things that aren’t there

- beliefs that have no basis in reality e.g paranoid delusions (believes that someone/something is trying to cause them harm) or delusions of grandeur (believes they have some power or authority)

- also known as alogia
- decrease in verbal output or verbal expressiveness
- alogia can make it nearly impossible to communicate your thoughts.
- people with alogia may answer a monosyllabic ‘yes’ or ‘no’ or delay getting words out

- apathy; where people have a lack of motivation to follow through any plans and neglect household chores.
- can include poor hygiene, lack of energy (andreason 1982)
