When did the Schengen Agreement take place
1995
What did the Schengen Agreement do?
It abolished many of the internal border controls within the EU
How many Schengen countries are there?
there are 26 Schengen countries
22 EU members and 4 non-EU members
What did the UK decide?
To remain outside the Schengen area, even before it’s 2016 decision to leave the EU.

Millions of EU citizens have moved freely across the Schengen area.
What did migration help?
This helped to fill job vacancies in other EU countries.

14 million EU citizens which is 2.8% of the EU’s population.
Why may some people be critical of thE Schengen Agreement?
-People want to maintain their soverignty and identity
-increased population
-far right movements
-lack of security checks - distribution of drugs/trafficking

What do Polish migrants contribute to the economy?
contributes £2.5 billion every year to the UK economy
What negative comes with most Polish migrants being male and aged 18-35?
icreases the liklihood of crime
What impact does Polish migration have on UK services
It puts a strain on hospitals and education due to the increased population
What has decreased in relation to the NHS?
in June 2017, figures were released stating there had been a 96% reduction in the number of nurses in the EU applying for work in the UK
