Cannabis
Causes euphoria, increase appetite, slurred speech, ataxia, nystagmus, conjunctival injection, lowers sperm count, increases heart rate, psychomotor effects 12 to 24 hours
Prescription opioids (Fentanyl, oxycodone, meperidine, hydromorphone, amphetamines, morphine)
Causes: euphoria, drowsiness, slowed breathing, pupil constriction, overdose or combining with alcohol can cause respiratory depression, coma/ death
Reversal- Naltrexone
Methamphetamine (meth, crystal, ice)
Chronic uses- SEVERE dental carries, loss of teeth, anorexia, pupils are constricted
Cocaine (coke, crack, rock)
Patients are happy, mentally alert, paranoia, decreased appetite, insomnia, nosebleeds, pupil dilation, tachycardia, HTN, angina/ MI, strokes, seizures, may cause septal perforation
Dextromethrophan (robo, robo-trip, triple C)
Obtained from OTC cough and cold medications.
Causes: euphoria, speech slurred, tachycardia, possibly elevated BP/ Temp, seizures, paranoia, confusion
Schedule 1 Drugs
Heroin, Ecstasy/ MDMA, PCP
Illegal to prescribe; NOT currently accepted for medical use/ HIGHLY ADDICTIVE
Schedule 2 Drugs
Demerol, Dilaudid, OxyContin, Cocaine, Amphetamines, Fentanyl
Only original prescription with prescriber’s signatures is acceptable. Total # of pills indicated/ NO REFILLS allowed
Schedule 3 Drugs
Tylenol with codeine, vicodin, anabolic steroids, testosterone
Schedule 4 Drugs
Benzo’s, ambien, lunesta, soma
Schedule 5 Drugs
Cough medicines with less than 200 mg of codeine, lomotil, lyrica
Which schedules can be mailed to patient?
Schedule 4 and 5
Prescription Pad must contain:
Practitioners name/ designation/ license #/ NPI/ supervising physicians name/ designation/ clinic address and phone numbers.
Prescription (written) must have:
- Date, name, and address
- Drug name, dosage strength, dosage form, frequency, duration
- Directions for use, quantity
- *controlled substances must have DEA #
- **FDA schedule II script must be handwritten on tamper-resistant prescription pad and manually signed
- Quantity in both number and written form
