Beta-Blockers
Uses: htn, post myocardial infarction, angina, arrhythmias, migraine prophylaxis
Non-selective beta blockers
Propranolol and Carvedilol
Cardioselective beta blockers
Potent because beta 1 receptors
Atenolol/ metoprolol
Contraindications to BB’s
asthma, COPD, emphysema, bradycardia, AV block (2nd to 3rd degree)
BB ADR’s
Bronchospasm, bradycardia, depression, fatigue, erectile dysfunction, hypoglycemia, HF
Alpha Blockers
Terazosin/ Doxazosin
Uses: HTN w/ BPH
Contra: Cataract/ Glaucoma surgery
Alpha ADR’s
Orthostatic hypotension, dizziness, syncope, priapism,
ACE and ARB’s
Uses: HTN, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, post-MI, HF
Improves left ventricular ejection fraction and survival post MI
BB warning ACE/ ARB’s
STOP immediately if pregnant
ACE/ ARB ADR’s
Angioedema, anaphylactoid reactions, ACE cough, hyperkalemia
CCB
Uses: htn, angina, arrhythmias, raynauds phenomenon (1st line)
CCB contraindications
AV block (2nd and 3rd), bradycardia, CHF
CCB ADR’s
HA, peripheral edema, bradycardia, HF/ Heart block, hypotension, QT prolongation, Constipation
