schaffer and emerson study AO3 Flashcards
STRENGTH LONGITUDINAL STUDY
P: Longitudinal study
E: 0
criticism : biased
point : study was bias
Explain: all working class families, same city, over 60 years ago, does not generalise well to other historical (temporal validity) and social contexts(lack of pop. validity) may be different ion the real world now
COUNTERARGUMENT: large sample size for the study gathered loads of data so as some generalisability/pop. validity to tell us how attachment forms and when
limitation: mothers report on infants
Point: based on mothers report on infants
Explain: bias, want to be seen as ‘good mothers’ so can report differently, less sensitive to infants protests
END: Lack of internal validity so may not tell us how and when attachments develop
Counterargument: observations were done by the parents may be better because its more likely to be natural so good ecological validity and can tell us about development attachments
difficulty: inflexible
Point: Theories such that development is inflexible
Explain: in some other cultures multiple attachments come first
END: so ppl may see these families as abnormal
Counterargument: tells us how attachment develops in other cultures and situations outside of Schaffer and Emerson
