Difference between separation and deprivation
- Separation when the caregiver and the primary attachment figure is absent for a brief period of time and doesn’t have a significant impact on development
-Deprivation is where they lose an element of the primary attachment figures emotional care which then becomes an issue for development
Bowlby theory of maternal deprivation
He thinks that continuous care from a mother is essential for psychological dev. if attachment of the mother or mum-sub is broken or disrupted during the critical period of 2.5 years then the child will suffer irreversible long term consequences which can affect their emotional and intellectual development and the risk goes up until the age of 5

effects of maternal deprivation
-affectionless psychopathy: inability to experience guilt or strong emotion for others linked to criminality
- abnormally low IQ
maternal deprivation and internal working model
lack of opportunity to develop an internal working model
poor relationship from poor treatment may lead to them forming poor relationships
Bowlby 44s thieves study
used a sample of 44 criminal teenagers who were accused of stealing and tested them for signs of affectionless psychopathy. where there family was also interviewed to see whether there was prolonged separation from their mothers . There was a control group of 44 non criminals
Bowbly 44 thieves findings
14/44 thieves had affectionless psychopathy 17/44 has maternal separation 12/14 who had affectionless psychopathy experienced deprivation
The control group 2/44 had maternal separation but 0 had affectionless psychopathy
