Schaffer and Emerson’s attachment research (1964) Flashcards
1
Q
Schaffer and Emerson’s experiment procedure
A
- 60 Glaswegian babies from skilled working class families
- visited once a month for 18 months
- researches asked parents to observe children by keeping a diary
- e.g. left alone in a room or left alone with a stranger
2
Q
Schaffer and Emerson’s findings
A
- four stages of attachment: asocial, indiscriminate, specific, multiple
3
Q
Schaffer and Emerson evaluation - strengths
A
- external validity - naturalistic observation was studied in the environment where it most naturally occurs
- generalisability to real life settings - researchers were not present at time
- longitudinal studies - same children observed so individual differences eliminated as a confounding variable, more internally valid
4
Q
Schaffer and Emerson evaluation - weaknesses
A
- lacks population validity - families from Glasgow and same social class, unable to generalise to all parents and children
- culture bias - results can not be applied to all cultures and locations around world
5
Q
Four stages of attachment - asocial
A
- from 0-6 weeks
- similar responses to objects and people
- preference for faces and eyes
6
Q
Four stages of attachment - indiscriminate
A
- from 6 weeks to 6 months
- preference for human company
- ability to distinguish between people but comforted indiscriminately
