Caregiver-infant interaction Flashcards
1
Q
Attachment
A
- a close two-way emotional bond between individuals
- each individual sees the other as essential for their own emotional security
2
Q
Why are attachments formed?
A
- infants are physically helpless - born with primitive reflexes such as sucking or grasping to help them survive
- short term security
- seeking interactions is innate and infants use social releasers
- first attachment is used as a template for future relationships
3
Q
Caregiver-infant interactions
A
- non-verbal
- infants cry has different meanings
- interaction is infant-led
4
Q
Macoby characteristics of attachment research (1980)
A
- seeking proximity
- distress on separation
- joy on reunion - secure base behaviour
- orientation of behaviour
5
Q
Reciprocity
A
- develops by about three months
- each person responds to the other and elicits a response from them
6
Q
International synchrony
A
- where infant and mother carry out an action at the same time
7
Q
Meltzoff and Moore interactional synchrony research (1977)
A
- videotaped 12-21 day old babies as an adult experimenter performed different facial expressions and gestures
- beginning of interactional synchrony in babies as young as two weeks old
- association found between actions that adult displayed and infants response
8
Q
Interactional synchrony evaluation - strengths
A
- Research support - Meltzoff and Moore (1977)
- Many observations involving caregiver-interactions have shown the same patterns of interaction
9
Q
Interactional synchrony evaluation - weaknesses
A
- unable to identify whether infants imitation are conscious or deliberate
