What are the three main bloodborne infection concerns when providing care?
viral hepatitis B and C and HIV
How does Hepatitis B or C Virus affect the body and how is it transmitted?
attacks the liver causing both cause and chronic disease, transmitted through blood and other bodily tissues
What are some symptoms of Hepatitis B?
jaundice, extreme fatigue, dark urine, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain
What are some symptoms of Hepatitis C?
fever, fatigue, decreased appetite, nausea/vomiting, dark urine, gray colored feces, joint pain, jaundice
What is HIV, what does it cause, and how does it affect the body?
human immunodeficiency virus, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), impairs body’s ability to fight infection
How is HIV transmitted?
through contact with infected blood and bodily fluid
Describe some initial and progressive symptoms of HIV
flu-like symptoms including fever, headache, rash, sore throat
swollen lymph nodes, weight loss, fever, diarrhea, cough
What are some examples of PPE?
non latex gloves, face shields, ventilation masks, protective eyewear, gowns
