Scene 5 Flashcards
COTTON-TAIL
And I’m still hungry!/ Scene change
How are you liking it so far? I have one more story left… It’s a bit unfinished but I will write more soon!
ANNIE
I think it is very good, Beatrix! I adore your creativity!
Really? You really like it?
ANNIE
I don’t just like it, I love it! There is just one thing…
Oh? Well, what is it?
ANNIE
Well, Peter… just from the conversation we had before, I can see a striking resemblance between you and Peter. Did you write him to think like you?
Yes. I must admit, I did.
ANNIE
Well Peter is a very naughty rabbit. He is selfish and unkind. But you, Beatrix, you are very sweet and well-mannered. Why do you portray yourself in this way?
I get in trouble a lot. With my parents. I tell them I want to draw and publish books, but they tell me that women can’t publish any books! I say I want to go outside and play and explore. My brother Bertram is allowed to do that, but that’s not a thing for girls. We argue and argue—which is very un-ladylike, or at least that’s what my mother says. Because we argue so much, I guess she sees me as an ill-behaved, incapable child. So I guess that is exactly what I am. I want to do what I want, and I don’t want to play by her rules anymore.
ANNIE
Just because some may see you as ill-behaved and rebellious, that doesn’t make you a bad person. You have a different way of thinking, Beatrix! You are talented, creative, and smart! You can be all of that, and still be a good person.
Yes… Yes I think you may be right, Annie.
