Trapezius
Origin- Occipital bone, ligamentum nuchae, and spines of c7 and all thoracic vertebrae
Insertion- A continuous insertion along acromiom and spine of scapula and lateral third of clavicle
Action- Shrug, steady shoulders, rotate arms, tilt and turn the head
Levator Scalpulae
Origin- transverse processes of c1-c4
Insertion-medial border of scapula, superior to spine
Action- Elevation of the scapula, downward rotation of the scapula
Rhomboid Major
Origin- Spinous process of T2-T7
Insertion- medial border of scapula
Action- Stabilizes scapula
Rhomboid Minor
Origin- Spinous process of C7 and T1
Insertion- medial border of scapula
Action- Stabilizes scapula
Serratus Anterior
Origin- Muscle slips from ribs 1-8
Insertion-entire anterior surface of vertebral border of scapula
Action-rotates scapula upward; raising arm, pushing, punching “boxer’s muscle”
Pectoralis Minor
Origin- Anterior surfaces of ribs 3-5
Insertion-coracoid process of scapula
Action-With ribs fixed, protracts and rotates scapula downward
