Muscles that act on the hip joint Flashcards
Gluteus Maximus
Posterior
Origin: Dorsal Ilium, sacrum & coccys
Inertion: Gluteal tuberosity of femur
Action: Major extensor of thigh
Gluteus Medius
Posterior- largely covered by gluteus maximus
Origin: lateral surface of ilium
Inertion: short tendon into greater trochanter of femur
Action: Abducts and medially rotates thigh
Gluteus Minimus
Posterior- deepest of all glutes
Origin: external surface of illium
Inertion: greater trochanter of femur
Action: Abducts and medially rotates thigh
Piriformis
Posterior on hip deep to glutes
Origin: anterolateral surface of sacrum
Inertion: greater trochanter of femur
Action: Rotates extended thigh laterally
Quadratus Femoris
Posterior on hip deep to glutes
Origin: inner surface of obturator membrane, greater sciatic notch, margins of obturator foramen
Inertion: greater trochanter of femur
Action: Rotates extended thigh laterally
Iliopsoas
lliacus and psoas major
lliacus
Anterior and medial
Origin: Iliac fossa, ala of sacrum
Inertion: lesser trochanter of femur via iliopsoas tendon
Action: prime mover in thigh flexion and flexing trunk
Psoas Major
Anterior and medial to Iliacus
Origin: by fleshy slips from transverse processes, bodies, and discs of lumbar vertebrae and T12
Inertion:lesser trochanter of femur via iliopsoas tendon
Action:prime mover in thigh flexion and flexing trunk
Pectineus
Medial compartment of thigh
Origin: pectineal line of pubis
Insertion: a line from lesser trochanter to the linea aspera on posterior aspect of femur
Action: Adducts, flexes, and medially rotates thigh
