Scalp and Dura Flashcards
What is the SCALP layer of the head?
Skin, subCutaneous, Aponeurosis, Loose connective tissue, Periostium (right on bone)
What are the layers after the SCALP?
- bones of skull (frontal, parietal, occipital)
- dura mater
- arachnoid
- Pia
- Brain
What three layers are considered part of the meninges?
Dura mater, arachnoid and Pia
What are the two layers of the dura mater?
periosteal and meningeal, sinuses inside
What is a sinus?
a cavity in the brain which holds CSF and venous blood
What is the subdural space?
where Dura meets arachnoid
What is a cistern?
any opening in the subarachnoid space of the brain created by a separation of the arachnoid and pia mater
What are the two dural folds in the brain?
Falx cerebri, tentorium cerebelli
What does the falx cerebri seperate?
the left and right hemispheres
What does the tentorium cerebelli seperate?
between big and little brains
What is the tentorial notch?
opening in tentorium cerebri
what are the dorsal sinuses?
Sagittal (inferior and superior), straight sinus, sigmoid sinus
What is the confluens of the sinuses?
meeting point of superior saggital, straight and transverse sinus
What are the ventral sinuses?
cavernous sinus——-petrosal (inferior and superior)
inferior to IJV, superior to sigmoid
What artery is on the external surface of the dura?
middle meningeal artery
