Blood Supply of CNS Flashcards
What two arteries enter the skull?
Internal carotid and vertebral
What two canals does the internal carotid go through?
carotid canal (foramen) and optic canal
What part of the brain does the internal carotid supply?
Forebrain
How does the vertebral artery enter the brain?
through the vertebral canal and foramen magnum
What parts of the brain does the vertebral artery supply?
Brainstem and forebrain
What are the branches off the vertebral arteries?
anterior and posterior spinal ( medulla), posteior inferior cerebellar (PICA)
What arteries are next to hypoglossal nerve?
anterior spinal and medial vertebral
What arteries are next to nerves 9,10,11?
PICA and lateral vertebral
What branches are off the basilar artery?
anterior inferior cerebellar (AICA), paramedian, circumferential, superior cerebellar artery (SUCA), Posterior Cerebral (PCA), Labyrinthine (w/ 8th nerve)
What are the major corticol branches of the Internal carotid artery?
Anterior and Middle Cerebral artery (ACA and MCA)
What are other branches off IC?
posterior communicating, anterior choroidal, opthalmic (1st branch off IC to eye)
What does the MCA supply?
supplies lateral cortex, Insula
deep branches supply deep cerebral nuclei
MCA gets most of blood, most pts get stroke in this artery
What major functional areas does the MCA supply?
primary motor cortex (UMN) and somatosensory
What does the ACA supply?
supplies anterior and middle medial cortex
What does the PCA supply?
posterior medial cortex and midbrain
