SCALP Flashcards
describe the extent of the scalp (the 3/2 different areas).
neurocranium- covers the brain
viscerocranium- facial skull
mandible- lower jaw
what are the 5 layers of the scalp?
SCALP
- skin
- (dense) connective tissue
- aponeurosis of the occipitalfrontalis muscle
- loose areolar connective tissue
- periosteum (outer layer of skull bone)
what is the cutaneous nerve supply of the anterior scalp (anterior to the auricle)?
trigeminal nerve (CN V)
V1- forehead with sensory
V2- cheeks with sensory
V3- jaw with motor and sensory
what is the cutaneous innervation of the posterior scalp (posterior to the auricle)?
sensory innervation from cervical spinal nerves C2 and C3- both ventral and dorsal rami
which layer of the scalp are blood vessel present?
dense connective tissue
how would wounds of the scalp bleed and why?
profusely as the dense connective tissue layer does not allow vessels to construct at the same level as the rest of the body
what arteries of the scalp are branches of the ECA?
superficial temporal
posterior auricular
occipital
what arteries of the scalp are branches of the ICA?
the opthalamic artery which gives off the supratochlear and supra-orbital arteries
what veins do the supratochlear and supra-orbital veins drain into?
angular vein - facial vein - IJV
where does the superficial temporal vein drain?
retromandibular vein - EJV
what veins of the scalp drain into the EJV?
retromandibular vein and posterior auricular
where does the occipital vein drain?
IJV
the veins of the scalp anastomose with one another as well as?
diploic veins in the skull bone and through these to the venous sinuses of the bran through valveless veins called emissary veins
what is a serious complication that could arise from scalp infections due to the presence of emissary veins?
provides potential routes for the spread of infections intracranially
