Scales of production Flashcards
What is one-off production?
One-off production makes bespoke product, every item will be different, in or der to meet the customer’s exact requirements.
Example of a one off production?
Wedding dresses can be custom made to perfectly fit -the bride and made to measure furniture is often produced to fit the dimensions of a room.
One disadvantage
the workforce has to be highly skilled, especially if the design is quite detailed - so it’s an expensive way to make things.
What type of production is one-off?
This type of production is also very labour-intensive - it takes a lot of time to make each product.
REMEMBER - One-off production
One-Off production makes one product at a time
What is batch production?
Batch production is where a specific quantity (a batch) of a product is made. Batches are repeated as many times as necessary.
Advantage of batch production?
It’s quicker than making one-off products over and over again.
Disadvantage of batch production?
The time between batches, when machines and tools may have to be set up differently or changes, is called down time. This wastes money because you’re not making anything you can sell.
REMEMBER - Batch production
Batch production makes a certain number of products.
What is mass production?
This is the method you’d use to make thousands of identical products, like newspaper, magazines and cars.
Why do people need mass production?
You’d only use this for a mass-market product - where loads of people want the same thing.
How is mass production broken down and explain the parts.
Each worker only does a small part of the process, and the product moves further down an assembly line for each stage. Products should have basic designs to make the assembly line simpler.
What does mass production use?
Mass production uses expensive specialised equipment and CAD/CAM.
REMEMBER - Mass production
Mass production is making loads of the same product.
What is continuous production?
Continuous production differs from mass production in that it runs all the time, without interruption, 24 hours a day.
