Metals Flashcards
Properties of cast iron
Very strong if compressed, but brittle and not malleable.
Properties of low-carbon steel (mild steel)
Quite strong and cheap, but rusts easily and can’t be hardened
Properties of high-carbon steel (tool steel)
Harder than low-carbon steel, can be hardened. Not as easy to work though and it rusts.
Use of cast iron
Car brake disks
Use of low-carbon steel
nuts, bolts, nails
Use of high-carbon steel
Tools, saws, drills
Properties of aluminium
lightweight and corrosion-resistant, but expensive and not as strong as steel. hard to join.
Properties of brass
Quite strong, corrosion-resistant, malleable, ductile, and looks good
Properties of copper
relatively soft, malleable, ductile and a very good electrical conductor
Properties of tin
soft, corrosion-resistant, malleable and ductile. Has a low melting point.
Properties of zinc
not very strong, corrosion-resistant
Uses of aluminium
Aeroplanes
Uses of brass
door handles
uses of copper
pipes, electrical wiring
uses of tin
foil, tin cans
