What is batch production?
A team of workers make a specified number of identical products
Workers operate in teams/ production modules
Workers skilled at using a variety of different machines
Quicker and more flexible than one off production as it can respond quickly to changes in demand
What is mass production?
Large numbers of products repeatedly made in assembly line production
Workers often only skilled at one part of manufacture
Reduces time and costs
Specialised industrial machines are used
What are the disadvantages of mass production?
The whole production line can quickly halt if there’s a problem
Changing the line to make different products can take a long time , costing money
What is the Toyota system?
Where the worker stays still and the garment pieces come to them
What are barcodes used for in manufacture?
To source and trace where fibres and yarns come from
What is progressive bundle production?
Where products are put together as they progress though the system
What is one off production?
One highly skilled crafts person produces a single product
Products made only once or in small quantities
Unique garments made to a very high standard
Expensive garments due to labour and material costs
Machinist responsible for their own quality control checks
