Scales of production Flashcards
One-off production
When a unique product needs to be designed and manufactured. commonly used for luxury personalised products.
Examples; personalised wedding cakes, chairs for disabled children.
Batch production
Process carried out over a number of products. Cheaper then one off production as multiple products can be made from one manfucatuing process. Jigs, fixtures and other ads will be used alongside CNC machines to facilitate more accurate and efficient production.
Examples; pottery, wooden furniture, jet engines.
Mass/line production
The division of labour is used by splitting up the stages of production by splitting the stages of production into individual roles performed by specialist in that area. This increases the production time of producing goods as-well as producing higher quality products.
Examples; clothing, bicycles, cars, ready meals.
Unit production systems
Used predominately in the manufacture of textiles. They are based on principle of using an overhead transporter system. Products are conveyed to different sections using overhead hangers where different processes take place. This is sometimes manually operated but generally computer operated as this process required very careful organisation and time management.
Quick response manufacture
used to reduce the lead time on producing products. QRM strategy focuses on going through the design and development process as quickly as possible. Customer satisfaction is high priority followed by quality of products. The supply chain of that company is owned by the company itself. This minimises the wait time on products and reduces the likely hood of an increase in the price of these goods.
